Roll Over, Roy Orbison

Oh, Boy! Did Roy Orbison get it wrong? Buddy Holly would have rolled over in his grave while Beethoven, contrary to the lyrics of Chuck Berry’s classic song, rests peacefully in his, secure in the knowledge that his music has withstood the test of time. Rock ‘n’ Roll die? That’ll be the day!

In the late nineteen sixties Roy Orbison, on a concert tour of Australia, arrived in Adelaide on the same flight as the Walker Brothers. I recall watching on television the airport interview in which Roy, always the nice guy, explained how much he loved the music of Scott Walker and his fellow band members. He went on to explain that he believed Rock ‘n’ Roll was a passing

That’s Mozart to Me!

This year 2006 is a significant milestone to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lovers as the musical world celebrates his 250th birthday anniversary. A lifelong Mozart enthusiast, I believe Mozart was the most comprehensively gifted musician who has ever lived. This piece is another one of my tributes to the Wunderkind.

Recently, a friend’s question took me by surprise. “What’s your favorite Mozart music?” She knows how I feel about Mozart, the only composer I consider “immortal.” In fact, I’ve loved the master’s music from childhood even before I knew anything more about his life. I looked at my friend, speechless. She repeated her question, while my thoughts maneuvered some answers.

Lara Fabian: The Nue Album Honesty And Integrity In The Purest Form

Lara started her career with a self-titled album, showing to the world that she is the essence of her own music. Her Pure album also contains the theme of honesty, pure music means honest music. Her English career also started with a self-titled album that contained a track called I am who I am . Lara stated that this would have been the title of the album if it wasn t self-titled. Being the person who she is and being true to herself means that her music will always portray honesty and integrity to her audience. Nue followed after her self-titled English album and in 2005 came an album entitled 9. 9 was the rebirth of Lara

Lara has always emphasised that music (and to me especially her music) is a universal language that can t be barred by language gaps. I believe that Lara will prove this philosophy with the release of her next album.

Led Zeppelin is the #1 Rock and Roll Band of All Time

I’ve been in rock and roll all my life and I’m well aware that The Rolling Stones have been called the best rock and roll band. Don’t get me wrong because I love Mick and the Stones, and the Beatles were my major musical influence, but here’s why I think that Led Zeppelin is the best rock and roll band of all time:

  1. BEST PLAYERS

First of all, John Bonham was the best rock and roll drummer ever to walk the face of this planet, and that’s an informed opinion coming from a former professional drummer. John played drums unlike anyone else ever did, still does, or ever will, and that fact is continually demonstrated in the astounding breadth and depth of

his recorded work. He had complete independence in all four limbs, he slammed his drums harder than anyone else, and he did it with speed and total precision, never once dropping the beat. His beats were innovative and creative, and John was never stuck in simple grooves. His fills were innovative, creative, complex, and technically brilliant, he knew when to keep it relatively simple (i.e. Kashmir), but he was always in the stratosphere of drumming. And to top that all off, John created a giant drum sound which is unique. It inspired a host of imitators who were able to imitate the sound of his snare drum, but only with a simple backbeat. There’s not one single drummer alive or dead who can begin to touch John’s power, creativity, speed, precision, and technical brilliance. I’ve heard that Jimmy still feels the same way about John as I do.

Misha Dichter, Prokofiev’s Sonata No.7, and Brush with Immortality

I try to limit my TV watching to the news programs since most of the “magazine” and “entertainment” programs are either about the banality of fame or the evil of murder. I don’t enjoy either topics.

But on some rare occasions I come across a program so profound that it is an instant “peak experience” that justifies a whole year’s worth of cable fees.

Last night as I was surfing through the channels I stumbled upon a piano concert, or rather… a force of nature conjuring up a whole new galaxy in thin air through sonic pyrotechnics.
