So, you want to learn how to play piano by ear. You think this skill is reserved for those with “special” talent. You’re wrong about that!

What does it mean to play by ear? Simply that the musician understands the fundamentals of diatonic harmony. To understand this, you just need to know a little about chords.

For example, in the Key of C Major we have 7 chords. These are: C Maj. D min. E min. F Maj. G Maj. A min. and B half-diminished.

Notice that these chords are lined up in order and that they are triads. Most harmonic theory in the western world gives a number to these chords using roman numerals. Simply put, we can call the C Major

Nearly all violinists are well versed in reading sheet music. There are literally thousands, if not millions of musical pieces for violinists to play. Violin sheet music is available for a wide range of classical music, including pieces written by composers like Beethoven and Mozart to contemporary pieces by Phillip Glass. Other violinists play bluegrass music or even rock and roll songs. People can either buy violin sheet music at music stores or online, or they can find free violin sheet music from many websites.

The Best of Sade is indeed that. A collection of sixteen of the very best songs she’s produced to this point. With her exotic beauty and steamy voice it seems as though it was her destiny to be a star. Her voice is the very definition of smooth and has over the years become her trademark.

She showcases the very best of her vocal talents on tracks like Smooth Operator, The Sweetest Taboo, and the emotionally gripping Jezebel.

I’ve always felt No Ordinary Love is a very powerful song. Gives me that feeling that it is being delivered from deep inside the soul of this outstanding artist. As do a lot of Sade’s songs.

As an eight-year-old, music played a small, but important part in my life. My mother taught my one year younger brother and I how to sing. We were expected to entertain the releatives when they visited, the harmony part sung by me and the melody by my brother, Allan. At the time a popular duo called the Moilen Sisters graced the airwaves weekly with two part harmony. Some of the songs they sang were “Music in the Air”, “Till We Meet Again” and “You Are My Sunshine”. We owned two radios, a table model Emerson in curly maple and an upright console model inherited from my grandmother. Every week we would sit entranced by the radio listening to “Lets Pretend”

Playing by ear is the ability to play a piece of music (or, eventually, learn an instrument) by simply listening to it repeatedly. The majority of self-taught musicians began their education this way; they picked up their instrument and began playing an easy melody from a well-known song, slowly picking out the notes as they went along. And even after these musicians master their instruments or a particular song, playing by ear still plays a large role.
